man I'm trying to translate a game (actually a couple games, but we'll see) for the first time in like four years and I don't have a clue what people use these days. there's all these different utilities for download but they don't say if they're any good or not.
so I guess I am asking for suggestions over here.

My arsenal includes Windhex32, tile layer pro, romjuice & atlas for dumping and inserting.
My platform-specific emulators are Geiger's SNES9X/ZSNES for snes stuff, and FCEUXD SP for NES stuff.

I used to use njstar communicator but jesus christ there has GOT to be something better by this point. Yes, a copy of Windows less than eight years old. Control Panel -> Regional and Language Options. You can install Japanese fonts, and even set it as the default language, meaning non-Unicode apps (read: S-JIS apps) will display properly. Works great, but It'll screw with non-Japanese stuff in fun ways, obviously. My favorite is the yen symbol for a backslash.

I use Microsoft Word for a lot of my translation work, and have found that Verdana 12pt works rather well.

JWPce. You can load Japanese text there, with the font size you choose.

I typically tend to use WindHex32 to read Japanese stuff, if it's in a ROM and I haven't dumped it yet. Otherwise, use JWPCe.

General tools: Hex Workshop, Atlas, romjuice, YY-CHR and Tile Layer Pro.
Special emulators: Geiger's SNES9x, FCEUXD SP (conditional breakpoints make me weak in the knees), and g8z_et_al's Gens tracer.

As long as you have the language installed you can use applocale on almost any editor to get it to display japanese correctly. Same thing with hex workshop and some other hex editors.

it's cool, I got it. who knew that windhex had a "turn on unicode" option? and a "change font size" option? pretty sweet little program :)
now I'm off to hack, and oh god boohoohoo this is hard :)
