Hi I am trying to change sonic sprite to the new character silver and I am using sonikspirite  to do it however the program does not support two of the colors I need is there another sprite editing tool I can use.

Here is a picture of silver and my first attempt I think the color of the body need changing. Any comments

Maybe the system itself doesn't support the amount of colours that you need. Can you not just improvise and use a different colour?

The problem you're going to have is the same problem I mentioned in the other Sonic hacking thread, Sonic's palette is shared by a ton of other objects in the game, so any change you make to that will make the enemies look terrible unless you're really careful (I assume you need a shade of green in the palette, I'd overwrite Sonic's blues with greens, that way the enemies still look halfway decent and you get the color you need). I think Soniksprite can edit the palette, if not I know ESE II (A level editor, you might want to look into hacking levels too) can and I'm sure there are other tools that can edit Genesis palettes in the archive.

I am using a sprite editor I tested my changes and they did not affect anthing but the sonic sprite however it will take time because he has at least 40/50 animation which I will have to repaint by hand

Dragonsbrethen, you keep saying how his palette is shared with a lot of other sprites in the game. Would it really be that hard to hack ONE more palette into the game and change Sonic to that?

It'd be more difficult than you are pegging it. First, if all palette indexes have been taken for a level, you'd need to hack in another one. That would require a tweak to the engine. That would also require you to find more ram (16 bytes if a 16-color palette, etc). If there isn't any free ram, you're kinda screwed.

Honestly, it'd be easier to change the palette each monster uses to another existing palette.

I think so, I can see it. Maybe Nightcrawler accidentally set it so Mods can't see attachments. :police:

Decompress the title screen graphics with ESE II's decompresser, open the output file in YY-CHR, edit to your liking, compress them with ESE II.

This place should have all the utlities you'll need to edit a Sonic game. ROMHacking.net's selection of Sonic-editing tools is a bit small compared to the Sonic hacking communities. For palettes, I suggest ChaoSaxPal, and for level editing, try SonED or SonED2 instead of ESEII, it will work better in the long run.

Fix that problem, please. If it's not found here, nobody has deemed it worthy enough to take the time to add thus far or nobody knew about it. One or the other. Wink

As Nightcrawler said, submit anything you think should be on the site. Now, about that part I emphasized, I don't think SonED is user friendly enough for a newbie and SonED2 is only good when you're working with split disassemblies. If I had any programing skill whatsoever I'd code a user friendly editor that works with both a standard ROM and split disassemblies, it's something that needs to be done, keyboard driven programs should have died with Dos. Keyboard shortcuts are nice, but I shouldn't have to hit "A" to go through every single chunk every time I want to add one to the level, ESE II is much better in that regard. I do admit ESE has it's flaws, especially when positioning objects, but it's much easier for a newbie anyone to use.
