In Final Fantasy 5 and 6, you don't gain stats (besides HP and MP) when you level up. Instead, you need to have either a stat boosting job or a stat boosting esper equipped, and this is tedious when you have to swap them in and out after every level to guide the stats the way you want. Has anyone ever written a hack that will increase each stat by a few points after levelling up?

That's called "customization." You can build them up as you see fit.

A few points?! Well, it makes little difference in FF6 since both damage formulas use level as the majority factor for damage. But in FF5 that would make a bigger difference since that formula seems to be sane.

To actually answer the question, no I don't believe so. Nobody has hacked FF5 (except for the translators) and I'm almost 100% certain that nobody has made such a patch for FF6.

Customization shouldn't mean I have to interrupt the flow of my game every time I level up. FF4 has stat gains per level. They're small, but they're there. I'm not saying you should get 10 points per level. My idea was to give 1 point to each stat per level, plus a random bonus to one stat. Then, instead of espers giving a bonus, you could use them to guide which stat gets the random bonus. Pf course, since the enemies weren't created to deal with progressively stronger players (outside the gains for espers and equipment), they would have to be pumped up in terms of strength, and also the equipment might have to be nerfed a bit. But to me, this means making a fun game into a brand new challange.

 Cry

Both JCE3000GT and I have hacked FF5, plus there was someone that made a few bugfix patches.

Can someone point me towards a guide or tutorial for a novice? The only rom hacking experience I have is some sprite and texting editing.
