Here's a question for the truly elite among us:

Let's say a ROM hacker was particularly pleased with one of his/her creations, and for the sheer aesthetic thrill wanted to play them as a tangible game on the original game system. (For simplicity's sake, we'll assume NES.) What would be the necessary process to bring this about?

Dr. Floppy figures that these ROM files we spend so much time hacking had to come from someplace. The original ROM files had to come from someone taking the original cartridges, hooking them up to a computer and mining the data. And if you want to get hypertechnical, *that* data had to be put onto the cartridge by some computer back in 1987.

So the question is, how do we flip the switch and do it all in reverse? If I want to burn a copy of "Super KKK Bros." onto an old NES cartridge and play it on an old NES for the sake of pure novelty, where do I begin?

There's a site that does this for NES games.

If you do it yourself, you need a donor cart that uses the same mapper as the rom you're putting on it, blank rom chips, and a programmer. There's a lot of stuff in the nesdev archives.

Been there, done that.

Technically, if I knew how to solder I could pretty much do it myself. Roll Eyes
