Design 20, In a Car

“Where are we going?” I asked, as we continued down the highway.

“Someplace...”. She hesitated. “Someplace better.”

I didn't know what she was talking about. I didn't care. I trusted her implicitly.

It was foggy that morning. I remember looking out the window at all of the familiar houses and landmarks as we slowly made our way out of our small town. The scenery was the same, but somehow different at the same time. The fog had a way of making everything seem distant and ethereal. I was still groggy and blurry-eyed when she forced me out of the house and into the car. I wondered if I was dreaming. What I remember makes more sense as a dream, but I know now that that wasn't the case.

As we got outside of our town and into the surrounding urban streets, I remember feeling lost but unafraid. It truly was like a dream. Strange people and architecture surrounded us. It reminded me of all the storybooks I had been reading. Each turn of my head was like a page turn, revealing more and more fantasy. All the while, the fog remained.

We left the city and got onto the highway. As the scenery got old (nothing but trees and governmently uniform brush), I looked ahead from the back seat through the windshield. I watched the lights of the oncoming cars illuminate the horizon from beyond the upcoming hills. The lights were bright and always getting brighter. As the headlights broke the horizon, they would approach like twin ghosts -- their souls always moving forward in perfect unison through the fog. From the unknown into the unknown.

I was tired but too mesmerized to fall back to sleep. I wondered if the fog would ever let up. I wondered if we would get through it and end up someplace different. Someplace better.

Dream of Space

I've been in this space craft for around 8 years now. As a child, I had dreamed of going into space. Time passed, of course, and I had scrapped that dream along with so many others. It's something that would have been nice, I told myself, but it's ou...(more)

it's all wrong An image: There's a shallow valley between to two very long and slightly inclined hills. There's a hole in the valley. A pit. Rolling down the valley and into the pit are boulders of various sizes...(more)

17 Days: Day 9
story, 2007-10-13 21:20:50

Doors. Counting doors. It had become my new obsession. It was difficult for the first week or so, but my mind eventually created some kind of ticker in its head. I would reset every morning. Exit my room into the hallway...(more)
